no bases! you want a reason why? here's ten
¡ya basta! bases are allowed to be in Okinawa indefinitely despite the will of the local people
Japanese citizens probably don't even realize their tax money pays to keep the American bases there but it's ridiculous to assume Okinawans don't want the bases to leave because they get more money from the forced rental of the land (and other indirect income) than they would make from agriculture (the occupation of many pre-WWII). Who farms in this day anyway? These bases are in prime areas where housing space is crunched. Besides, do the math--I have. Looking at the official statistics for land lease cost and military base size (all available online), in the early 2000s I calculated that military base land was being leased for roughly $1 per square foot per year. That has got to be the sweetest deal in the developed world. (I'd love to rent prime land in any of the coastal United States for that price, let alone on a subtropical island where one could lay on the beach with an umbrella in their drink.) Those lucky enough to have homes and rent to American military (who do not fit on base and must live off base) raise the rental price on purpose because the government will pay a high price (that's American tax dollars) and often share the profit with their tenants (that's the soldiers). Now we all have to do what we have to do to get by in this world but for those that like to bitch about what happens to your tax dollars, that's one more thing and I'm sure it's not just happening in Okinawa as the American military have bases in 130 countries when there's only ~194 countries on planet Earth. It's called Imperialism. The British did it and we should've learned from their mistakes. Our founders left behind that country, that accent, and that tea. We should also leave behind the supposed need to impose our might.
Now after all that seriousness, you'd probably be surprised to know that I'm actually more of a comedian than an activist (go vegan!) or philosopher. I take pride in making people spit out their drinks, pee their pants, fall off their chair, or vomit in laughter. But at the end of the day, it's all about the tunes. buck-tick & siouxsie para siempre...
